Advocating the need for a medical Team Approach in the treatment and recovery from breast cancer, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, in partnership with the American Society of Breast Surgeons, urges breast cancer patients and their physicians to insist that their treatment be handled by a team of healthcare physicians with the appropriate expertise for each procedure and level of care.

The Team Approach to breast cancer care brings Breast Cancertogether an interdisciplinary group of key medical professionals – gynecologist, radiologist, breast surgeon, medical oncologist, and a plastic surgeon – who work together at the onset of a woman’s breast cancer diagnosis to develop and implement a treatment plan tailored for each patient. When the Team Approach is implemented at the time of diagnosis through treatment and recovery, it can result in significantly improved patient outcomes and quality of life.

“Each step of the cancer care journey requires specific medical expertise. When a team of experts works together, the outcome for patients is vastly improved,” said ASPS President Michael McGuire, MD. “However, when these specialists do not work in conjunction, opportunities are missed, and patient outcomes suffer. The problem is the Team Approach is underutilized. The ASPS is very pleased to be part of this extremely important venture along with the ASBS which represents physicians who play a critical role in the Team Approach.”

The ASPS, ASBS, physicians, breast cancer survivors, advocacy groups, manufacturers, and the media recently met in New York to discuss the critical role the Team Approach plays during an event entitled, “Connecting the Docs: The Team Approach to Breast Cancer Care.” Leading manufacturers of breast reconstruction products – Allergan Medical, LifeCell, and Mentor – were in attendance lending their support for the Team Approach.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons has announced the selection of Michael D. Costelloe as its new Executive Vice President and as the Executive Vice President of the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation, its affiliated foundation. Mr. Costelloe currently serves as Senior Vice President, International Division, of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center where he is responsible for business development, clinical facility development, program development, legal affairs and government relations matters for UPMC’s international projects. UPMC is an $8 billion integrated global nonprofit health enterprise with 50,000 employees and 20 hospitals and is closely affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh.

Since 1998, Mr. Costelloe has worked on behalf of UPMC to conceptualize and negotiate strategic alliances with public and private healthcare providers in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Egypt, the Czech Republic and the United Arab Emirates. His work has included creating joint ventures for hospital and cancer center operating entities in Ireland and the U.K., as well as the negotiation of millions of dollars in project financing and operating budgets with Italian government agencies to build and manage a high-specialty hospital in Sicily.

“Michael Costelloe’s significant international experience and his focused business development and transactional background will serve ASPS and PSEF in good stead as they continue their international outreach and their efforts to develop and expand various programs and initiatives for their membership and the specialty of plastic surgery,” said Dr. Michael McGuire, ASPS president. “He is clearly the person to transform ASPS/PSEF into a service business – member-centric, efficient, productive, entrepreneurial, and dynamic.”

Children and lawnmowers are dangerous combination. That’s why the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and other medical societies have offered several safety tips this year to help prevent lawnmower-related injuries.

When such injuries occur, it’s often a plastic surgeon that performs reconstructive surgery, hand surgery or wound care to restore form and function.

Safety Tips

Children should be at least 12-years-old before they operate any lawn mower, and at least 16- years-old for a ride-on mower.

Children should never be passengers on ride-on mowers.

Always wear sturdy shoes while mowing – not sandals.

Young children should be at a safe distance from the area you are mowing.

Pick up stones, toys and debris from the lawn to prevent injuries from flying objects.

Always wear eye and hearing protection.

Use a mower with a control that stops it from moving forward if the handle is released.

Never pull backward or mow in reverse unless absolutely necessary – carefully look for others behind you when you do.
